Une chanson de KID A sur laquelle le groupe a travaillé un moment avant de réussir à en faire quelque chose qui les satisfaisait. Pendant un certain temps, le groupe a hésité entre deux titres : « Lost at Sea » ou « In Limbo »… Petite particularité : C’est la première fois que l’on a vu Ed à un clavier !

Thom explique que l’idée de la chanson lui est venue après OK Computer, quand le succès l’a autant épuisé que déprimé :

C’est en novembre que la chanson a pris forme, elle aurait été enregistrée pour la première fois après le concert donné à Bercy pour Amnesty International (le 10 décembre), du moins la partie chant, enregistrée alors qu’il est au volant…selon ce que dit Ed dans son journal (cf. supra)

Dans le journal qu’il tient en ligne, Ed commence à nous raconter l’enregistrement d’In Limbo le 22 juillet. 9 mois après la première version enregistrée par Thom (sûrement sur son DAT), le groupe est content :

Le 3 août, Ed nous raconte que Thom est satisfait de son premier enregistrement, surtout son chant. Ed lui est bien content d’avoir pu rajouter un peu d’énergie là-dessus…

Ed apportera en 2001 quelques informations à propos de la loop de fin :

And once you fall upon something you really like and feel is yours, you’re quite loathe to give out all the information, because, well, you still have some use to be made of it, and you don’t want someone nicking your idea. We want to surprise people and get the most out of the instruments, boxes, and stuff we’re using. And the only way you do that is by not revealing anything.”

In Limbo est jouée en live la première fois à Arles (France).

La chanson a régulièrement été jouée en live en 2000, un peu moins en 2001-2, très peu en 2003, et plus vraiment ensuite …
Thom la présente ainsi le 15 septembre lors du concert à Nijmegen :

Radiohead donne un concert privé sur Canal +. In Limbo y est jouée dans un arrangement original : dès le départ, tous les instruments entrent en jeu, et Thom est à la guitare (alors qu’auparavant, il s’amusait avec le tambourin)
Par la suite, sur la partie américaine de la tournée, c’est Nigel qui s’occupera du tambourin !

Thom a déclaré en 2004 que jouer la chanson en live était vraiment difficile, et qu’il était quasi impossible de reproduire certains sons de la version studio.
