Une chanson qui est restée assez discrète. Le groupe ne l’a que très rarement interprétée en live… Thom a trouvé l’inspiration pour cette chanson très tôt, alors qu’il n’avait que 16 ans (cf. citation supra), en référence à un fait divers qui l’a beaucoup marqué : un homme avait tué dans la petite ville tranquille de Hungerford près de 16 personnes avec une arme à feu. La première version de la chanson avait pour fin ’just shoot your gun’, « allez tire toi »… mais c’était assez mal venu au moment où la chanson est sortie, Kurt Curbain venait de se suicider….

L’enregistrement de Sulk se fait à The Manor. C’est pratiquement la dernière chanson de The Bends à être enregistrée.Le groupe n’est pas satisfait de toutes les versions tentées, la force du live n’y est pas, mais en une journée l’affaire sera bouclée grace à un bon mixage.

“We’d attempted ‘Sulk’ at RAK and The Manor, and we knew it could be better because people would say that they’d heard it better live. We did it in a weekend – we started on Saturday afternoon and by Sunday night it was all finished. So everyone was really relaxed about it and no one could understand why it had been such a struggle in the first place because they played it every night on tour. It was a bit of a problem for Thom because he wrote it when he was about 16 about the Hungerford killings, and the last line was ‘Just shoot your gun’. But he was worried about it as it didn’t mean anything any more, and particularly after the Kurt thing, he didn’t wont to sing that. So he changed it to ‘You’ll never change’.

“‘High And Dry’ was one of the songs on the demos, and I said to the record company that I thought if was amazing and it was the best one, but the view from the band was that it was too good for this record and they were going to save it for the next one. So it was put aside and never mentioned. We finished everything else, mixed it all, and then ‘High And Dry’ come up, and we hadn’t heard it for a year, so we put the tape on and decided to go with it, so the one on the album is the demo version. It’s strange as well that after all the worry about singles, this is the one that eventually went out just before the album.”[/quote]

D’après ce que les membres de Radiohead en ont raconté, l’enregistrement a vraiment été éprouvant. Jonny était malade, Ed avoue qu’elle leur a donné du fil à retordre au mixage. Selon Thom, on avait utilisé pas mal le tambourin pour l’enregistrer, mais on ne l’entend presque pas sur la version finalement mixée.

Jonny lui était en petite forme le jour de l’enregistrement, il a donc fait service minimum.

C’est la chanson sur laquelle la maison de disque misait le plus, mais pourtant elle n’a connu aucun succès, et c’est une de celles qui plut le moins sur l’album…

Le groupe l’a très peu jouée en concert, et apparemment, quand il l’a fait, c’est à contre cœur. Le dernier live remonte d’ailleurs au 1er novembre 1995.
