Ca n’a jamais été une des chansons les plus marquantes du groupe, c’est simplement un bon titre sur The Bends, très doux, très mélancolique, mais ça n’en reste pas moins un de leur préférés, certainement parce que le texte fait appel à des choses très personnelles. Il arrive encore qu’il soit joué actuellement.

L’inspiration du groupe, et surtout de Thom pour cette chanson n’est pas très claire. Les paroles ne sont pas très explicites… Thom l’a introduite de manière assez étonnante lors des tournées de 95-96, par exemple en disant qu’elle traite du :

Thom l’a également présentée comme un hommage à Harry Niellson :

Mais qui est donc ce fameux Harry Niellson que Thom aurait supplié de chanter sa chanson ? Un chanteur des années 70 apparemment, (dont le nom exact est Harry Nillson, je ne sais pas si c’est Thom qui a mal orthographié le nom ou ceux qui ont transcrit ses propos) dont le tube (que vous connaissez, si si je vous assure !) était « Everybody’s talkin’ », sûrement encore un de ceux qui ont influencé Thom.
Et puis, il y a aussi les Sumos, et le livre de ‘A Brief History of Time’ de Stephen Hawking. Vous pensez qu’il n’y a aucun rapport ? Thom vous prouve que si :

Le groupe est en studio et enregistre de nouveaux titres pour le prochain album, parmi lesquels « Black Star ». Comme le rapportent les membres du groupes dans Answerphone, il est à noter que pour la première fois, ce n’est pas avec John Leckie, leur producteur depuis le début, qu’ils vont enregistrer « Black Star », mais avec le jeune assistant de ce dernier, un certain Nigel Godrich. Ca va tellement bien se passer (ambiance de fête + moins d’une heure pour enregistrer la chanson), que la collaboration va continuer très longtemps.

Sur la tracklist (écrite à ma main par Thom Yorke) de cette K7, on peut lire le titre de ’Black Star’ dans la première colonne, celle des chansons que le groupe destinait au futur album, avec toutefois la mention « rough », ce qui singifie que le travail de mixage n’est pas encore tout à fait terminé.
