Le journal en ligne Boston.com a interviewé par téléphone Peter Gabriel, actuellement en tournée en Amérique du Nord de promotion de “Scratch My Back« , un album sorti en 2010 de reprises en version orchestrale avec voix de chansons de divers artistes qu’il apprécie particulièrement : Lou Reed, Arcade Fire, David Bowie, Neil Young, les Talking Heads, Elbow, et Radiohead avec »Street Spirit“.

L’album avait connu une suite avec ‘I’ll Scratch Yours’, où les artistes repris étaient invités à reprendre en retour des chansons de Peter Gabriel. On pouvait donc s’attendre à ce que Radiohead rende la pareille, et il semblerait même que c’est Wallflower qu’ils étaient censés couvrir…

Pourtant… Peter Gabriel avait expliqué à The Guardian que Thom Yorke n’avait pas aimé la reprise qu’il avait faite de Street Spririt, et que donc rien ne viendrait en retour…

Dans l’interview pour Boston.Com, Peter Gabriel revient un peu sur l’affaire, et confirme tout en délicatesse ce qui s’était déjà dit à l’époque… Thom Yorke a fait le mort :

A. Mostly
they were really enthusiastic except Thom Yorke (of Radiohead). At
first he said he hadn’t heard it but the rest of the band had and they
didn’t much like it so … so that was … thank you Thom. (Laughs). And
then it was weird because he was going to do a version of [my song]
“Wallflower’’ which he said he used to listen to a lot when he was a
kid. But then I think they got busy, and he got pissed off being asked
about it so [he] abandoned that one.

Q. That’s
too bad since it seems like Radiohead would be a band that would cite
you as an influence. But musicians, hey, you’re a temperamental lot.

A. I know. Difficult bastards at the best of times. It takes one to know one. (Laughs)
