Les paroles peuvent étonner, car elles sont assez agressives, voire cruelles…. Il y a souvent sûrement plusieurs manière d’interpréter cela, et Thom a donné plusieurs pistes :  il l’ a souvent introduite en concert en disant qu’elle parle de cannibalisme…..

De même, on s’est étonné de la présence d’une mélodie bien marquée, les chansons de l’époque Kid A-Amnesiac tendant à s'”électroniser” au détriment des mélodies qui avaient fait les beaux jours de l’époque The Bends-OK Computer.

Si Ed nous décrit l’enregistrement de la chanson (cf. supra), une déclaration de Thom chiffre précisément la durée du travail : 373 jours, ou 313, selon les magazines .

Ce qui est certain, c’est que l’enregistrement a été très long… et que Thom a détesté la chanson à cause de ça :

Le groupe est en studio, ils testent des sons pour le futur album. Ed nous raconte sur son journal en ligne ce qui se passe en studio. La première version de la chanson sonne assez “The Smiths”

Cette chanson a été jouée pour la première fois, dans une version acoustique, lors de la première webcast surprise le 9 décembre 1999. (Le montage avec ce magnifique choix de photo n’est bien sûr pas de nous !)

Après une petite pause, le groupe est de retour en studio. Le travail sur Knives out reprend, et tout le monde est très content du résultat. Tout le temps pris pour façonner la chanson n’a pas été vain !

Par la suite, on a retrouvé la chanson jouée en live  plusieurs fois lors des concerts de l’automne 2000, le premier live fut le 13 juin 2000 à Arles (France).

Finalement, la chanson ne figure pas sur l’album KID A. Quelques bribes de paroles insérées dans le livret caché de l’album signale que cela fut peut-être malgré tout envisagé :

le groupe n’a pas voulu la faire apparaître sur KID A, la jugeant en retrait de l’ambiance générale. C’est enfin sur Amnesiac qu’on l’a retrouvée.

Tournage d’un clip de promotion de Knives Out, par Michel Gondry, connu comme le réalisateur des clips de Björk, mais aussi d’IAM chez nous… et depuis réalisateur de films.

Au départ, Michel Gondry a envoyé un synopsis que le groupe a bien reçu, Thom est d’accord.

Son idée était de s’inspirer d’une expérience personnelle, angoissante… Au moment où il a reçu Amnesiac, il venait de rompre avec sa petite amie et c’est ça qu’il a décidé de montrer dans le clip.

Voici une définition du clip dans les Inrocks :

Dans le rôle des deux amoureux qui ne s’entendent plus, Thom Yorke, et Emma De Caunes. Petite particularité : le clip est un plan continu.  L’histoire se passe dans une pièce, où il y a une télé. Sur l’écran de celle-ci, on voit au départ Thom et Emma, dans un train, se comportant un peu comme un couple : ils parlent, ils rient… Puis le plan bouge vers la pièce et l’on voit Thom, allongé dans un lit, vraiment nerveux et agité. Il se tortille, tort les couvertures… Nouveau mouvement de caméra, et cette fois ci, c’est Emma que l’on retrouve allongée sur une table d’opération (enfin il n’y a que sa tête qui dépasse… son corps n’est pas visible mais est remplacé par une parodie du jeu docteur maboul… Comme dans le jeu, des docteurs s’affairent autour d’elle et tente de lui retirer des pièces en plastique du cœur sans toucher les bords des emplacements où se trouvent les pièces.Thom, à côté d’elle qui a la visage marqué par la douleur, la réconforte en lui tenant la main. La vidéo continue à bouger, on voit ensuite à nouveau à la télé Thom et Emma, mais cette fois ils se disputent, jusqu’à ce que Thom lui offre une bague, ce qui les calme tous les deux et les fait se sourire. Et ça continue dans ce style sur plusieurs plans enchaînés. On verra même une sorte de bonhomme coeur qui joue de la guitare, avec la photo d’Emma sur le Coeur…. La scène se termine sur une souris au corps allongé et qui a le visage de Thom…

C’est ensuite que ça se gâte… Ni Thom Ni Michel Gondry n’expliqueront précisément la raison de la brouille, mais ce qui est certain, c’est que le réalisateur sera interdit par le groupe d’utiliser le clip dans ses DVD de clips par exemple…
