« Backdrifts (Honeymoon is Over) » est une chanson à dominante électronique, basée sur une loop créée par Thom avec un synthé Yamaha QY70 Walkstation portable avant les sessions d’enregistrement de Kid A et Amnesiac.

Un ’Backdrifter’ est une personne à contre courant de ce qui se fait ’normalement’, quelqu’un qui décide de s’éloigner de la norme, de ne pas la suivre bêtement.

A l’époque de la sortie d’OK COmputer, le groupe se dote d’un site internet assez tortueux, où sont disséminés des textes et illustrations qui ne font pas sens tout de suite.

Thom pense à la chanson, sur son synthé Yamaha QY70 sequencer, un soir de neige. La neige s’accumulait partout, s’entassait sur les branches des arbres , quand un train japonais est passé à proximité. Sous l’effet de la vitesse, la neige est tombée pas paquet des branches. Tout à perte de vue était recouvert d’un manteau blanc, à l’exception de quelque endroits noirs par ci par là qui ressortaient…

A priori, Thom aurait fait écouter le son aux autres, alors qu’ils enregistraient des chansons pour KID A, qui à leur tour s’en serait chargé.

Quoiqu’il en soit, Phil lui, nous confirme que la chanson est bien née vers 1999-2000, pendant les sessions d’enregistrement de KID A-Amnesiac, mais ça serait Jonny et Colin à l’initiative, et non Thom :

Le groupe est en tournée dans les pays ibériques, pour tester les nouvelles chansons à venir. Backdrift ne fait pas partie de ces nouveautés rodées sur scène, ce qui signifie que le travail est vraiment encore en cours, et que le groupe n’a pas réussi à se mettre d’accord.

Le groupe est à Los Angeles.Thom a envie de tester un nouveau contexte d’enregistrement. Un hôtel prestigieux a été réservé pour l’occasion, près de l’Ocean Way Studios. Contrairement à l’époque KID A, où tout le monde travaillait dans son coin, cette fois c’est comme en concert, avec chacun qui joue sa partie dans le même endroit, que les enregistrements vont se faire… enfin sauf pour backdrifts.

Thom postera un peu plus tard dans la partie ’scrapbook’ de radiohead.com ces trois feuilles de paroles griffonnées à la va-vite dans un restau, preuve que les paroles de Backdrifts ne sont pas encore fixes :

Quelques semaines avant la sortie officielle du nouvel album, un enregistrement dit « leaked » (piraté) de celui-ci fait surface. Les pistes qui sont diffusées ne sont pas celles que l’on entendra finalement sur l’album, mais les chansons dans l’état de leur mix en février.
Pour Backdrifts, les différences sont vraiment très légères. La fin est légèrement plus longue.
