My Iron Lung

Les paroles ont été écrites le jour où Radiohead a dû se retirer du Festival de Reading (fin août 1993), à cause des cordes vocales de Thom. Pourtant la presse a déformé l’affaire, faisant passer le retrait de la participation du groupe au festival comme du snobisme, et a fustigé cette attitude, Thom en est resté très frustré. La chanson était donc plutôt amère…
Au fur et à mesure, elle a aussi exprimé la colère de Thom sur le fait que personne ne s’intéressait à leur musique, en dehors de Creep. Il y décrit combien cette chanson est leur poumon d’acier (iron lung), une prison qui les maintient en vie. ‘C’est notre nouvelle chanson, et comme la dernière, c’est une perte de temps.’
et quand on l’a interrogé sur le titre, comme dans Mademoiselle en octobre 1994 :
Thom: it’s an artificial respirator. They were used on polio patients in the ’50s. You’d be stuck in this huge steel box, and your head was the only thing that could move. You’d just live like that for the rest of your life.

La groupe joue la chanson en live à l’Astoria.
Apparemment, comme Jonny l’a expliqué dans le Magazine « Glamour Guide for Trash », numéro 5, 1995, la version de l’album est en fait… cette version live dont on a retiré les bruits du public :
Trash : So the definitive version is live ?
Jonny : Yea, but it doesn’t sound like it because we took out the audience. »

En prévision de singles, et du futur album, le groupe a enregistré quelques titres en studio. Thom les a classés et copiés sur une K7 démo. Sur la Face-A, les chansons qui seront sur l’album, sur la B, les faces-B…

La semaine du 8 octobre 1994, le single « My Iron Lung » atteint son meilleur classement des ventes avec la 24e place.

Personne n’y croyait vraiment, même chez le label du groupe qui poussait plutôt Radiohead à terminer son album.
“That was only meant to be a fan-based item,” says Perry Watts-Russell, Capitol VP of A&R. “It wasn’t a proper first single. We really didn’t even pursue radio airplay for it.”

In my fruitless quest to understand the music industry, I must ask what was the point of ‘Iron Lung’ being released as a single only to college stations in America? It slid out and died months before The Bend’s’ release.
“Slid is a good word for it,” laughs Thom as he stares into the distance.
When one asks why was it allowed to die, there’s no straight answer. Since the band couldn’t support the single, because they were finishing the album, it wasn’t a priority… or something like that.
Thom mumbles, “Funny, we never got any straight answers either.” He even took his questions to the top brass but that got him nothing but a reputation.
Jonny carefully recites like a child repeating a hated lesson. “It was released to colleges, and suddenly it was being played by some other stations, but there was no real release planned, but oh never mind, we’ll just see what happens… it’s like…” Jonny affects a totally confused air. “It’s like you don’t have to play it, that’s all right. What? This is strange. I don’t think any harm would be done by people hearing it outside of colleges. People can hear it: I’m not embarrassed by it,”
“I like it. I can hold a tune,” scoffs Thom. “It’s fine, bullocks, who cares.” Thom and Jonny obviously do.
