Dans un article du NME, on apprend que le groupe est potentiellement en train de travailler la chanson :
The band have a recording studio in one of their buses and are demoing and recording song at soundchecks.
At this point, the destination of the new material is unclear. Some sources claim that the plan is to release a new Radiohead album next summer, while others say that the material will appear on an EP released early in 1998.
A Radiohead spokeswoman confirmed that the band are recording on the road. « They’re still putting stuff down, » she said. « In the soundchecks they tend to warm up with completely new stuff, as they’ve always done. But this time Nigel Goodrich [sic] is on the road with them working on stuff. Because they’re going to be on tour for a year they’re taking the recording gear with them. »
The band have started on tracks with the working tiles : ’Man-O-War’, ’Motion Picture Soundtrack’, ’I Promise’, ’True Love Waits’ and ’Nude/Neut’. Recordings are at a very early stage.
The band played ’Motion Picture Soundtrack’ at their London Astoria fan club show in September.
Recording on the road has been revolutionised by advances in technology. A portion of REM’s last album, ’New Adventures In Hi-Fi’ was recorded while the band were on tour in America – one vocal track was even recorded in a hotel shower stall – and U2 regularly flew back to their Dublin studio after their Zoo TV shows to work on what became ’Zooropa’.
Visiblement, le groupe a tenté d’enregistrer la chanson lors de la tournée Ok Computer (1997-1998). Mais ça n’aurait rien donné. On lit que Thom la trouvait trop « Joy-Division », Ed trop « Roy Orbison »…

Au détour d’un article de presse, l’espoir renaît ! Ed a fait quelques confidences au magazine Rolling Stone : « I Promise » pourrait faire partie du prochain album !

Michael, le webmaster du site citizeninsane.eu s’entretient avec Ed, et lui pose des questions pointues sur les chansons… Ed y confirmera ce dont on s’était tous douté, « I promise » est abandonnée… et elle est très influencée par Roy Orbinson.
Ed : « No ! No, no… »
Michael : « (laughs) Okay, um, ’I Promise’, some people think it’s a bit like ’House of Cards’. »
Ed : « It’s a bit like a Roy Orbison number… »

En mai, le groupe apprend la sortie d’OKNOTOK, une version remasterisée d’OK Computer, avec trois “inédits”, parmi lesquels I Promise. Dans la foulée, un clip est dévoilé :
