“I thought I’d probably think of something to put in the gaps later, but I never got around to it.”

Colin dates the start of the record back to the summer of ‘95 when they supported REM on tour. He recalls playing ‘Climbing Up The Walls’ at a soundcheck at the Hershey Stadium. Peter Buck was checking their progress from the sound desk, and when they’d finished, he walked away, whistling the tune with his hands in his pockets. ‘No Surprises’. ‘Let Down’ and a different version of ‘Airbag’ were coming together. The latter took its final shape after Phil, inspired by the Mo’ Wax sound, carved up a recording of his own drumming, giving it that artificial, reconstituted feel.

Last Night A DJ saved my life” d’Indeep.

The drum track to »Airbag,« which was recorded, sampled with an Akai S3000 sampler and then laboriously edited and manipulated over two days on the band’s Macintosh. Yorke admits this technique was inspired by the work of DJ Shadow [a sample/turntable artist from the San Francisco Bay Area who has released two acclaimed albums on the London/Mo’ Wax label- GW Ed.], and the result has led many to argue that Radiohead are, in fact, creating a sort of new rock/techno hybrid.
For two days, we did programming, cutting up bits up drumming we had done and we didn’t really know what we were doing. I think everybody thought we were mad, so to see the song actually come together… it was brilliant. it was amazing that we had done it. I’m one of those people where i have a sound in my head so when we actually do get it and finish it it’s like, ’how the hell did we get to that point ?’ we mixed it, and later sitting there listening to it, it felt like we weren’t responsible for it, but everyone was telling us that we were.
A lot of people just seem to think we’re this serious, humorless band, but a lot of things we do are really funny, » adds Yorke. « On »Airbag« we had a great time. There was a party going on for like three days in a row. By the end of it the studio was just a fucking pit of all sorts of disgusting things — half-finished bottles of wine and beer spilled on the desk and ashtrays everywhere. It was great. We do play cards and bridge and shit like everybody says we do all the time. But then, » Yorke jokes, « we go smoke crack in the bathroom afterwards.
I remember mixing Airbag. Nigel played it back really loud and I thought, This is something we never dreamed we could get done. I was so happy I rang my girlfriend just to say, ’Wow, we’ve done something really great’. That’s the height of the experience. Then it stops, you finish the record and you’re sick of it and the only time I get to like our stuff again is when we go out and play it live. There are a lot of good reasons for not doing tours : it fucks you up, it takes too long, it costs shitload of money. But… it’s about looking people in the eye while you’re playing your songs.

1. « Airbag » – 4:46

3. « Meeting in the Aisle » – 3:09
4. « A Reminder » – 3:51
5. « Polyethylene [Parts 1 & 2] » – 4:22
6. « Melatonin » – 2:09
7. « Palo Alto » – 3:43
