Jusqu’à Paranoid Android, c’était la meilleure entrée dans les classements du groupe, et c’est toujours une chanson très populaire.
Certainement une des chansons les plus tristes du groupe, les paroles sont assez déprimantes… Le rythme est imparable et en fait une des chansons les plus appréciées de Radiohead.

The devil really will get the last laugh in all cases without exception, and if I let myself think about that to long, I’d crack. I can’t believe we have fans that can deal emotionally with that song… That’s why I’m convinced that they don’t know what it’s about. It’s why we play it towards the end of our sets. It drains me, and it shakes me, and hurts like hell everytime I play it, looking out at thousands of people cheering and smiling, oblivious to the tragedy of it’s meaning, like when you’re going to have your dog put down and it’s wagging it’s tail on the way there. Pour résumer il s’agit pour Thom de sa chanson la plus noire, elle n’offre aucune issue. Selon lui, elle parle du diable, qui a toujours le dernier mot, ça le remue profondément à chaque fois qu’il la joue. Enfin des fois, il faut relativiser ce que dit Thom… Il en a aussi dit que c’était un bon tube pour noël…
Radio one a eu une fois de plus une réaction assez mitigée vis à vis du titre, ce qui ne l’a pas empêché de se classer cinquième dans les charts.
Comme Sur Pablo Honey, cette chanson qui clôt l’album est la préférée de Jonny.

Apparemment, la chanson s’est écrit facilement, presque « toute seule » (voir la longue citation).

Thom explique alors que l’inspiration lui est venue de « The Famished Road » de Ben Okri, un livre où un esprit à trois tête mène le personnage principal à sa route, dans une interview avec Brian Draper en décembre 2004, en ajoutant que R.E.M. les a aussi inspirés pour cette chanson :

La chanson est jouée pour la première fois à la télévision canadienne, sur « Musique Plus ». Le titre était alors ’Three-Headed Street Spirit’ et le « Immerse Your Soul In Love » que l’on trouvera ensuite à la fin n’y est pas encore.
Thom confirme l’inspiration de la chanson.

Le groupe entre en studio pour enregistrer les chansons du futur album. En août, le travail sur « (fade out) » (le titre a changé une fois de plus), semble avancer puisque Thom n’a pas apposé la mention « rough » sur cette K7 :

Vraiment un très bon clip, à cette époque d’ailleurs, toutes leurs vidéos étaient encensées.
Celle ci est entièrement tournée en noir et blanc, et a été filmée dans un désert près de Los Angeles. Le réalisateur a utilisé une caméra spéciale qui lui a permis d’incorporer au clip final des effets de ralenti, alors que le reste est tourné en vitesse normale… Du coup, le résultat est très esthétisé et un peu petit côté Matric avant l’heure pas désagréable du tout.
On peut par exemple voir Jonny qui saute dans la caméra, en vitesse ralentie. Jonny, assez à côté, tourne la tête pour Jonny sauter, puis la retourne dans l’autre sens, le tout en vitesse normale. Apparemment, il existe deux versions du clip, totalement identique à une scène près…

Peter Gabriel sort « Scratch my back », un album où il reprend des titres d’artistes qu’il aime bien. Y figure une reprise de Street Spirit :
En principe, les artistes repris doivent à leur tour reprendre un tube de Peter Gabriel dans ‘I’ll Scratch Yours’ … mais avec Radiohead cela ne se fera pas (il semblera que Wallflower était prévue) .
Thom Yorke n’aurait pas aimé la reprise de Street Spirit…et Peter Gabriel en a été affecté :

Le groupe de métal « The Darkness », qui a régulièrement repris la chanson dans ses concerts, annonce son intention d’en insérer une reprise dans son futur album, qui sortira le 21 août.
