Kemble U1 silent

the stage piano is a Kemble U1 silent which is basically the insides of
Yamaha piano, built in to a case constructed and assembled in Germany,
it works well and is useable as a normal acoustic piano or , with the
centre pedal locked in, it lifts a bar across so the hammers don’t
strike the strings and will trigger a sampled Concert Grand which can be
sent to headphones or mixer / pa system……………We use a
combination of all possible outputs and use mic / transducer and sample
all blended together which works well and sounds better than ever
Just in case anyone was curious about the piano. I was onstage in
Bristow and took this shot while I was tuning it. It surprised me that
it wasn’t a Yamaha. Guess I expected almost all Rock/Pop artists to play
Yamaha.

This is a nice Kemble piano, responsive action, great tone. I’ve seen a
few Kemble pianos in my career and they seem to be a very nice piano.

There were pickups mounted (taped to the plate) under the strings for amplification and digital sampling as well.

Rhodes Suitcase Piano Mark I 73

l’orgue (comme sur Motion Picture Soundtrack ou Everything in its right
place)

Yamaha Upright U1 (Thom Yorke)

You also admitted that you had always wanted to become famous. Seventeen years later, have your feelings changed?
I guess it depends what you’ve become famous for. Fame for fame’s sake, or for working your nuts off at what you do. Also when I was a kid, I always assumed that it was going to answer something – fill a gap. And it does the absolute opposite. It happens with everybody. I was so driven for so long, like a fucking animal, and then I woke up one day and someone had given me a little gold plate for OK Computer and I couldn’t deal with it for ages. I moved down to Cornwall, went out to the cliffs and drew in a sketchbook, day in, day out. I was allowed to play the piano and that was it, because that was all we had in the house. I did that for a few months and I started to tune back into why I’d started doing it. That’s how I remember it anyway. I remember having nothing in the house, except a Yamaha grand piano. Classic. And the first thing I wrote was ‘Everything in Its Right Place’.

Pyramid SOng, Live @ Paris, 2001 :

haven’t had time to get pics of the touring / recording Yamaha U1 piano but it is for sale for about £2500, the case has plenty of knocks and scratches but is mechanically sound, having been tuned and serviced continually since new.

“Lot 328W

Radiohead: A Yamaha U1 piano, used for studio and live work,

Sold for £3,750 (€4,730) inc. premium”

Young Chang (Thom Yorke)

live piano has been problematic up until now, the old Young Chang which has been used for ages has a great tone but the action is very tired, producing small creaks and clicks which is frustrating whilst recording…… I am presently searching for a replacement action for this but they are hard to find as most new ones are now produced in China and are different to the original…………
en septembre 2006, Plank cherche toujours :
Main piano has been Yamaha U1, the other piano used for recording is an old Young Chang which was made in Korea with the original Yamaha tooling, the new ones are made in China and are quite different………………….
A good day today, made better by hearing the old Young Chang piano sounding good after many hours have been spent working on it, repairing broken and worn hammers and shafts that have become tired after a few years wear and tear, a great piano !!
