The brick walls we tended to hit were when we knew something was great, like ’Bloom,’ but not finished. We knew the song was nearly something. Then Colin had that bassline, and Thom started singing. Those things suddenly made it a hundred times better. The other stuff was just waiting for the right thing.

Did the band explain to you why they specifically wanted the sound of flugelhorns? They’ve never used them before.
They’d been listening to the soundscape style of pianist and harpist Alice Coltrane at the time, whose music very much inspired them. As flugelhorns have a dark, mellow sound, Jonny thought they would be a perfect addition to ‘Codex’ and ‘Bloom’.

When and where did the session take place?
The session was held in a very luxurious but discreet studio in London.

Open our mouths wide.
Open our mouths wide.
A universal sigh.
« So why does this still hurt ? »
Don’t blow your mind with why.
Why does this not add up ?
Don’t let it blow your mind.

Across a great divide.
A giant turtle’s eyes.
Jellyfish float by.
Your rules do not apply.
As open as the sky.
The holes we measure out.

It’s what keeps me alive.
Why does this not add up ?
A spider to a fly.

A universal sigh.
A giant turtle’s eyes.

Don’t blow your mind with why.
The current’s just too strong.
Don’t let it blow your mind.
Across a great divide
The words between the lines.

None of this stuff is mine.
I throw my arms wide.
Open your heart and smile.
Don’t look so serious.
No need to pull that face.
Always I’m before you.
The cards that have been dealt out.
Moving out of orbit.
Turning in somersaults.
Ours not to reason why.
I’m reeling with this feeling.
Where er’r the current flows.
Precious little time.
Distances and time.
The wind takes all the leaves.
And then it will take me.
The parts we have to play.
I cannot help but laugh.

In ‘Bloom,’ when Clive goes from the electro pads to the live kit, and my guitar shoots up an octave, I’m like, ‘Wow!’ When we came up with that, it was like, ‘OK, we got it.'” “The whole thing is a morass of syncopations and layers, ” says Deamer, who started playing with Selway last winter, working out parts, before rehearsing with the whole group. “But every time we play, it grows. Something slightly different can happen.

Zane: That’s a Friday night to look forward to, eh? All right, we’re gonna get into the remix category right now. This is the fitter happier round and you’ve chosen the Mark Pritchard remix of Bloom, and we’ll find out why in a second…

Zane: That’s a sneak attack isn’t it, of a remix! It starts and it sort of lulls you in with this very deep krautrock groove, and by the end of it, it’s positively bludgeoning you with all forms of frequency.

Ed: It’s like being in a tunnel isn’t it. That’s for me, it’s that thing that krautrock does, you’re in a tunnel and you’re just going along and it’s like getting darker and darker and darker and heavier…

Zane: (song is continuing) Oh that sounds amazing… he’s clever! Mark Pritchard remix there of Bloom, Radiohead, and I was just playing you the versioon of Jamrock that he did, a DJ edit I suppose that Giles Peterson played me in a versus a while back. Definitely a name to look out for! So we were going to talk about something, weren’t we?

Italo Rossi: About the remix album… how did you come up with choosing people like Jamie XX, SBTRKT or Jacques Greene? Why do you think “Bloom” is the most remixed track?

Colin Greenwood: Uhh… I don’t know why “Bloom” is the most remixed track. I guess it’s just the one people are most into because I think we said to people they could choose things they were into and we didn’t… I love the Caribou remix of “Lotus Flower”, I think it’s really fun.
