Inspiration pour la chanson : 1995-1997 ?

‘last flowers’ a mis beaucoup de temps avant d’aboutir. Le titre a de même quelque peu évolué. Le premier titre, plus long,  « last flowers (till hospital) » serait inspiré d’un panneau que l’on pouvait lire sur le chemin de l’hôpital Radcliffe à Oxford. Le groupe entier y a travaillé, mais au final, c’est une version acoustique interprétée par Thom en solo qui va rester.

En 1997, apparaissent sur le site  www.radiohead.com, de nombreuses nouvelles pages, avec des textes et des images. Généralement, les textes sont de Thom, qui exprime ses angoisses, ses pensées, parlent des textes qu’il est en train d’écrire (on va surtout le comprendre rétrospectivement, à l’époque, ça semble juste un foutoir mystérieux).

Plusieurs références à “last flowers” laissent clairement penser que notre chanson est en cours d’écriture.

Lors des soundcheks d’avant concert, on entend quelques bribes d’une nouvelle chanson, qu’on reconnait bien avec le recul !

Thom rejoue la « nouvelle chanson », mais cette fois en entier, lors des soundchecks avant le concert au Hammerstein Ballroom à New York destiné à être diffusé sous le titre « MTV 10 Spot ». Les soundchecks sont entièrement filmés !

On ne connait alors pas encore son titre, mais la nouvelle chanson commence à attiser l’attention des fans.

Sur la page stuck in a frozen lake, du site radiohead.com à l’époque OK Computer (1998-1999), on trouvait ce texte :
(en rouge les choses importantes) (elle est encore consultable là ).

Thom y parle d’une nouvelle chanson (celle entendue en soundchek l’année précédente !) : “last flowers till the hospital”. Le titre lui a été inspiré par un panneau à Oxford, le thème par son obsession autour de tout ce qui est médical : les ambulances hurlantes passant devant chez lui…

En 1999, dans le livre From a Great Height, on peut trouver cet avis (étonnant) d’Ed (qui manifeste rarement de la déception) sur la chanson, et qui laisse penser que malgré quelques tentatives, le groupe n‘a pas réussi à faire sonner convenablement la chanson et a décidé de l’abandonner :

Thom répond à une question sur le message board officiel du groupe, qui finalement, laisse comprendre que selon toute évidence, la chanson n’est pas délaissée, et même plus, qu’elle pourrait être enregistrée ! Jonny et Thom ont réécrit le second refrain, et le titre actuel serait “cogs”

Dans les deux cas, au milieu de textes qui n’ont pas grand chose à voir, et nous emmènent plutôt vers les chansons du futurs KID A, on retrouve les mots “cogs sarcy cogs swrking round” employés par Thom en 1999 sur le message board du groupe.

Doit-on penser que soit le groupe travaille sur la chanson avec l’idée peut-être de l’intégrer au futur album ? Ou alors Thom est-il juste content de son jeu de mots ?

En 2004, sur la nouvelle version du site www.radiohead.com, on trouve le même texte qu’on avait pu lire en 1997-8 :

Après une très longue période où la chanson n’avait plus été jouée, Thom l’interprète en acoustique lors d’un concert solo de charité à Londres au Methodist Central Hall. Les fans sont aux anges. Les plus accroc d’entre eux avaient entendu les versions (un peu confidentielles) de 1997 et sont loin d’avoir oublié !

 

C’est définitif, tout le monde est au courant que cette vieille chanson est une superbe ballade…

Le groupe poste sur le blog du site Radiohead.com, le Dead Air Space, une photo d’un tableau où figurent des titres de chansons qu’ils ont travaillées en studio du 19 au 30 septembre. Regardez bien la première liste de chanson, tout en bas… le numéro 21 :

Thom enregistre une version acoustique de la chanson pour le premier épisode de « Live From The Basement ».

Les fans qui l’avaient commandé quelques temps auparavant sur www.radiohead.com, seul revendeur, reçoivent l’édition spéciale, dite « discbox » d’In Rainbows. Il s’agit d’un coffret avec des CDs, des vinyls et des illustrations de l’album. Il contient notamment une exclusivité, un CD bonus, où figure une version studio de Last Flowers.
