On a entendu la chanson pour la première fois en live acoustique à la radio en 1995, le 28 octobre, jouée sur XFM.
Elle s’appelait alors « An airbag saved my life », un gros titre que Thom expliquait avoir lu dans le manuel AA (Automobile Association) qu’il avait reçu par la poste.
Après quelques retouches, la chanson a été intégrée à l’album OK Computer.
La première version était beaucoup plus acoustique.

Commentaires :
Airbag est la chanson qui ouvre l’opus, et pour cela, le groupe l’a voulu différente du reste de l’album. Une fois de plus semble s’exprimer ici l’obsession de Thom au sujet des voitures, obsession qui lui viendrait d’un accident qu’il aurait failli avoir à dix-sept ans.
« Ma vie n’a pas encore été sauvée par un airbag, mais je pense qu’à chaque fois que l’on passe près d’un accident, au lieu de soupirer et de faire avec, on devrait se garer et sortir de la voiture et se mettre à courir en criant »Je suis là ! je suis vivant !" - Thom dans Select Magazine, Juin 1997.
On entend au début de la chanson un petit bruit de grelot... joué par Colin, même s’il n’aime pas ça.
Pour cette chanson Phil s’inspira de Mo’Wax, puis coupa le son de sa batterie pour le reconstituer ensuite sur la piste de fond. Ed a déclaré à Guitar World avoir fait de la programmation pendant deux jours. « C’était de la folie, mais au final le résultat est génial. » Thom était tellement content de cette session d’enregistrement qu’il appela sa copine Rachel pour lui raconter...
Comme souvent, c’est Phil qui eut le dernier mot et choisit la meilleure prise. Une des autres influences avouée par Jonny est celle de DJ Shadow « Thom and Phil worked a whole day with the computer to cut up the drums and try to make it sound like DJ Shadow. »
On comprend donc qu’il y a eu un long travail de mix avant d’arriver au résultat final.
On pouvait lire à ce propos dans Guitar World en 1998 :
« The drum track to »Airbag,« which was recorded, sampled with an Akai S3000 sampler and then laboriously edited and manipulated over two days on the band’s Macintosh. Yorke admits this technique was inspired by the work of DJ Shadow [a sample/turntable artist from the San Francisco Bay Area who has released two acclaimed albums on the London/Mo’ Wax label- GW Ed.], and the result has led many to argue that Radiohead are, in fact, creating a sort of new rock/techno hybrid. »
et ed : « We do try to be diverse. The guitar sound on ’No Surprises’ was supposed to harken back to [the Beach Boys’] Pet Sounds, ’Let Down’ was a nod to Phil Spector, ’Exit Music’ had a [composer Ennio Morricone atmosphere, ’Airbag’ was an attempt to do something like DJ Shadow-but because, we haven’t paid the dues, if you like, to play those types of music, we fail to get what we hope to achieve. But by going down that route, we find our own thing. »"

Le titre prévu au départ était « Last Night an Airbag Saved my life », jeu de mot en référence à la chanson disco de Indeep sortie en 1983 « Last Night A DJ Saved My Life ».
Fabien Benoit : « Dans »airbag« , je pense que »Juggernaut« est plutôt employé dans le sens »mastodonte« que »camion« . Ca colle mieux au symbolisme (à mon avis). »

"Ca n’a pas grand chose à voir avec les paroles au sens propre, mais je trouve que c’est une chanson superbe, au multiple sens. De plus, j’aime à penser que Thom a un plan et qu’il sait parfaitement que chaque pas qu’il fait avec le groupe le mènera au but au cours de toutes ces batailles futures, malgré les secousses, je renaîtrai. Au milieu de ces lumières, et de tout ce mouvement, je renaîtrai. Commentaires du groupe dans le Melody Maker de Mai 1997 :
« Originally titled »Last Night An Airbag Saved My Life« in a typically tongue-in-cheek tribute to lndeep’s 1983 disco hit, »Last Night A DJ Saved My Life", this makes for a brooding, claustrophobic start to the album.
Colin : « We wanted it to be like »Planet Telex« off »The Bends« -a start that’s not really anything like the rest of the album. It’s quite dancey. That’s cos Phil’s been attending drum’n’bass nights. »
Phil : « I told you, I thought it was a line-dancing evening ! It was actually DJ Shadow who inspired it-the way he cuts up beats is amazing.The end result doesn’t really sound like what we were aiming for, but that’s probably a good thing. »
Ed : « It’s about the wonderful, positive emotion you feel when you’ve just failed to have an accident ; when you just miss someone and realise how close it was and stop the car and just feel this incredible elation. There’s something joyous about it- life suddenly seems more precious. » Key lyric : "In a jack-knifed juggernaut, l am bom again...
Thom : « Airbags go off spontaneously, so researchers claim. I think that’s a cool judgement, don’t you ? Driving along in your mercedes. »
Colin : « They’re actually quite dangerous things. They cankill. »
Ed : « What would you know about it ? You can’t even drive ! »
