On a découvert la chanson quand Radiohead l’a jouée le 6 mai 2006 à Copenhague, mais à bien y regarder, par ci par là il y avait quelques pistes bien avant.

Les paroles sont relativement énigmatiques, mais semble faire référence à un thème cher au groupe : le temps qui passe qui change les gens, au point qu’on ne les reconnaisse plus.

> Genèse de la chanson :

- Déjà en 2002, on trouvait des bouts de paroles sur une feuille de papier que Thom avait utilisée pour se souvenir des paroles de A punch Up at The Wedding (Le groupe rodait alors des nouvelles chansons, en Espagne et au Portugal). La feuille s’était envolée et avait été récupérée par le public :

- A la même époque, quelques bribes de paroles de la partie scrapbook du site officiel font penser à ce qui sera plus tard la chanson :

- Dès 2005, la chanson semblait faire partie des projets du groupe, puisque son titre (enfin ’15 step thing’) est lisible sur cette photo postée sur le DAS le 30 septembre, suite à une session d’enregistrement :

- Une photo parue sur le blog du groupe le 20 février 2006 et ayant pour titre 15step1, donne des indications sur la création des paroles :

- Sur une autre photo de tableau, cette fois-ci postée le 8 mars 2006, alors que le groupe répète en prévision d’une tournée de l’été pour essayer des titres en live :

- Le 6 mai 2006, la chanson est jouée en live pour la première fois à Copenhague, puis très régulièrement dans ces concerts de 2006, où le groupe teste de nouvelles chansons. Radiohead semble satisfait de 15 step :

 

- Thom en parle un peu dans le magazine anglais Mojo de Août 2006. On apprend alors que c’est la chanson de Peaches « Fuck The Pain Away » écoutée en boucle qui les a inspirés pour savoir quoi faire du son encore expérimental. :

 

There’s a track called 15 Steps which was born out of a mad rhythm experiment that we did last year. At first we thought, “How the fuck can we pull this off live ?” but then we were listening to Fuck The Pain Away by Peaches a lot and that indirectly inspired us to turn it into something different. It’s got a bass line like Airbag and it’s in 5/4 time with this ‘clapping’ groove throughout. I really like the lyrics.

- Une ligne de ce que l’on retrouvera plus tard dans les paroles de la chanson a même servi de message d’introduction sur radiohead.com, le 18 décembre 2006, juste avant la pause que s’octroie le groupe pour noël et après la session de travail au studio de Covent Garden abec Nigel Godrich :

- C’est au début de 2007 que Radiohead se retrouve pour travailler sur la version studio de la chanson.

Le 11 janvier 2007, Plank, le technicien spécialiste des instruments du groupe poste un message sur le blog qu’il tient sur le site www.stringsreunited.com (http://www.stringsreunited.com/plan...) Il y parle du Mellotron, un instrument utilisé justement pour 15 step :

Something that gets used from time to time is the model 400 Mellotron - usually around in the studio somewhere, being used either as a musical instrument or a bookshelf, depending on what is going on.............the Mellotron was the first sampler in it’s own kind of way, the original version having a number of drum loops.

Sounds are recorded onto 1/4" tape which is then formed into loops, which are assembled on to a frame which can hold up to 35 individual loops. When each key is pressed and held down the corresponding tape runs across it’s own play head for about 11 seconds and will then stop until the key is released, after which the tape will return to it’s original position in the frame.

There are also 35 tape heads which need cleaning regularly to keep a clear sound and to stop the tapes being damaged. We have a few frames with some very old sounds on them and a couple of empty frames for experimenting with - making these up is a very slow process, taking several hours to get one octave worth of notes together.
It’s a great and interesting instrument that sounds like no other, there are some sampled Mellotron sounds around which sound pretty good and are not a bad substitute if you can’t find the real thing.
Since the mid ’60’s, the Mellotron has been produced by Streetly Electronics who I visit occasionally when the old girl needs sorting out. John and Martin have more experience than anyone else and are very helpful.
The control room is pretty much together now, a couple of minor faults on the desk, but should have these ironed out in the next couple of days (?)

Le 3 septembre 2007, le même Plank poste une photo de l’Autoharp qu’Ed utilise dans la deuxième partie de la chanson pour obtenir ce song si particulier.

 

 

- Le 3 février 2007, le groupe évoquait la chanson sur le dead air space :

- Cette photo du 7 mai 2006 , postée sur le blog du groupe le 8 du même mois, a pour titre thom15step, ce qui laisse penser qu’elle a sûrement été prise pendant l’enregistrement de la chanson. Elle peut donner quelques indications sur le matériel utilisé pour ça...

 

- Le 26 mai 2007, on retrouvait à nouveau une mention de la chanson en page d’introduction du site radiohead.com

 

- Une sorte de crayonné de Stanley, portant mention des paroles de la chanson a été posté sur Hodiau Direkton (une section pseudo-cachée sur le dead air space) le 31 mai 2007.

La phrase « a dark voice sitting on the staircase » apparait alors pour la première fois.

- En avril 2007, on pouvait entendre quelques notes de la chanson sur le blog du groupe.

- En octobre 2007, on a eu la confirmation officielle que la chanson figurerait sur le nouvel album « in rainbows », et c’est en novembre 2007 donc que la chanson a été dévoilée.

- le 9 novembre 2007, pour la webcast Thumbs Down, Adam Buxton et Garth Jennings parodiait la fin de Seven :

- Une version live pour la télévision (BBC2’s Later... with Jools Holland)

- Thom et Jonny ont travaillé sur une version de la chanson en collaboration avec la fanfare USC Trojan Marching Band destinée à être jouée le 8 février 2009 lors de la cérémonie des Grammy où In Rainbows concourrait pour obtenir l’award d’album de l’année.

La répétition a eu lieu le 6 février dans le studio « Stage 25 » de Sony, et le USC Trojan Marching Band l’a enregistrée sur une compitalion de 2 CD : Trojan Legacy : 40 Years of D^r. Arthur C. Bartner and The Spirit of Troy :
